What photography beginners need to know about the meanings of camera lens models

Many beginners in photography will always ask me how to choose my first camera or ask me to recommend a camera. When I sent the camera and lens model to the other party, the other party looked blank and didn't know what the camera lens I recommended meant. Today, I will answer it for you.

1. Meaning of camera model

Take the Canon full-frame camera 5 D Mark IV as an example.

①. EOS

EOS is the English abbreviation of Electro Optical System, which means electro-optical system in Chinese.

②. Fuselage series

When the number is 1, it is Canon's flagship SLR camera, such as EOS-1 D X Mark II.

A single digit other than the number 1 is Canon professional SLR cameras. The smaller the number, the greater the professionalism, such as 5 D, 6 D, and 7 D series.

When the number is two digits, it is a Canon APS-C mid-range SLR camera, and the model number is usually incremented by 10 increments, such as 70 D, 80 D.

When the number is three digits, it is a Canon APS-C entry-level SLR camera, and the model number is usually incremented by 50 increments, such as 750 D, 800 D.

When the number is four digits, it means Canon APS-C popular entry-level SLR cameras, such as 1500 D and 3000 D.

③. D is the initial letter of Digital, which stands for Digital SLR.

④. Mark means model in Chinese, which means an improved model on the basic model. Canon only has professional SLR cameras and flagship SLR cameras.

⑤ Indicates the first generation of products. The larger the number, the newer the product. As above, Canon only has professional SLR cameras and flagship SLR cameras.

2. Meaning of lens model

At present, Canon's lenses on sale are mainly divided into four types of mounts: EF, EF-S, EF-M, and EF RF. Among them, EF is dedicated to full-width SLR, and EF-S is dedicated to Canon APS-C cut-width SLR. The EF lens can be directly mounted to the APS-C body, but the EF-S lens cannot be connected to the full-width body, otherwise it will damage the reflector. The EF-M bayonet is exclusively for EOS M mirrorless cameras. The RF mount is dedicated to Canon's full-frame mirrorless EOS R and EOS RP. Currently, only the following four lenses are launched: RF 50 mm F 1.2 L USM, RF 28-70 mm F 2 L USM, RF 24-105 mm F 4 L IS USM and RF 35 mm F 1.8 MACRO IS STM.

The following specifically interprets the names of EF and EF-S mount lenses.

The EF mount lens is suitable for full-frame, APS-C format EOS cameras, and can also be mounted on EOS film cameras. When mounted on the camera, the mark aligned with the mount is red.

The EF-S mount lens is a special lens for APS-C format EOS digital SLR cameras, and S is the first acronym of Small Image Circle.

The EF lens name is composed of a variety of numbers and letters, etc. The lens name is roughly divided into five parts: ① lens bayonet, ② focal length range, ③ maximum aperture, ④ ⑤ lens characteristics. Generally, lenses are arranged in the order ① to ⑤. If there are many symbols representing lens characteristics, such as the lens name of EF 70-200 mm f/2. 8 L IS III USM, these symbols are arranged at the end.

① Indicates the type of EF lens.

The EF-S lens is exclusively for APS-C format models, and the EF-M lens is exclusively for EOS M. To install lenses other than the EF-M for the EOS M, you need to use the mount adapter EF-EOS M.

② Indicates the focal length range of the lens.

The fixed focus lens is represented by a single numerical value, and the zoom lens is marked with the minimum focal length and the maximum focal length respectively.

③ Indicates the maximum aperture of the lens.

Fixed focus lenses are represented by a single numerical value. If the maximum aperture of a zoom lens is constant, it is represented by a single numerical value. For a lens whose maximum aperture changes with the change of focal length, two numerical values are used to represent the maximum aperture of the wide-angle end and the telephoto end respectively.

④ ⑤ represent lens characteristics.

The lens basically adopts the same optical design structure, and this mark is only added when there are minor differences in detail. II and III represent the 2 nd and 3 rd generations of lenses with the same optical structure. STM indicates that the type of the autofocus drive motor is a stepping motor.

L is the abbreviation of Luxury, indicating that this lens is a high-end lens.

USM/STM represents the type of autofocus drive motor, including STM stepper motor, USM ultrasonic motor, and the like.

IS IS the abbreviation of Image Stabilizer, which means that the lens IS equipped with an optical hand shake compensation mechanism.

DO denotes a lens using a DO lens (multilayer diffractive optical element).

It is characterized in that diffraction can be used to change the light path, and can play a role in reducing the weight of the lens.
