Do beginners in photography buy fixed focus or zoom lenses

Should photography beginners buy fixed focus or zoom lenses?

First of all, let's distinguish between zoom and fixed focus lenses.

Zoom lens is a camera lens that can change the focal length within a certain range, so as to obtain different viewing angles, different sizes of images and different depths of field, such as Canon 24-105 mm f/4 L lens. A fixed focus lens is a lens with only one fixed focal length, such as the Canon 50 mm f/1. 8 lens. In terms of convenience, the zoom lens is better than the fixed-focus lens, but in terms of picture quality, the manufacturing process of the fixed-focus lens is relatively simple, so that better picture quality can be obtained than the zoom lens.

So should photography beginners buy fixed focus or zoom lenses? It is recommended that beginners buy a zoom lens for their first lens. Canon's cut-off kit lens is 18-55 mm or 18-135 mm lens. Why it is not recommended to buy a fixed focus lens. Because beginners in photography are not familiar with composition at first, it is not clear which focal length can produce what effect. They can only get familiar with it by shooting more and exploring more. At this time, if you buy a fixed-focus lens directly, you can only shoot scenes from a certain perspective due to the limited focal length, and you cannot train composition from multiple perspectives.

Many merchants often launch one-camera multi-lens packages, such as a body with an 18-55 mm lens and a 55-250 mm lens. In this regard, it is not recommended for beginners to buy double lenses directly. If you really need to use a focal length above 135 mm, such as shooting birds, it is recommended that you buy a single lens of 18-200 mm. Theoretically, the 18-55 mm lens and the 55-250 mm lens can be made into a lens with a focal length of 18-250 mm, but in actual shooting, only one lens can be installed on the same body. You cannot quickly shoot birds in the distance with a focal length of 250 mm, and then quickly switch to 18 mm focal length to shoot large scenes near your feet.

It is suggested that beginners in photography can shoot more things of interest around them at the beginning, instead of sticking to fixed themes. Taking the 18-135 mm lens as an example, you can use 18 mm to shoot sea scenery and city scenery, 35 mm to shoot humanities, 85 mm to shoot portraits, and focal lengths above 135 mm to shoot birds and flowers. During specific shooting practice, you can adjust the focal length of the lens to the above specific value, then fix it with adhesive tape, and practice one by one according to the cycle.

For example, this month, the focal length is fixed to 18 mm to practice shooting scenery, and next month, the focal length is fixed to 35 mm to shoot humanities. At the beginning, after scholars practiced all the focal lengths, they used Lightroom software to count which focal lengths of their photos were most used. In this way, you can know which fixed-focus lens you are suitable for buying, or which "small ternary" lens to upgrade.

To sum up, it is recommended that beginners in photography buy a zoom lens for door covers. After scholars practice taking a certain number of photos (such as 10,000), they can consider upgrading the zoom lens or buying a suitable fixed-focus lens.
