How exactly is it considered the correct way to operate a single-lens reflex camera?

The camera in our hands is a tool for taking pictures, and it is only when we operate the camera very skillfully and accurately that we can capture those wonderful moments. But what is the right way to operate a camera? In fact, even the manual does not stipulate how we should use it.

In fact, everyone has a different way of operating, because the camera we use, the lens will be different, and the environment when shooting is also different, in addition to some technical errors that need to be corrected, the camera is still how to use it smoothly, and it is important to make a good film.

Focus or compose first?

This is a question that confuses many people. Compose the picture first, usually by pressing the shutter halfway, locking the focus, moving the camera and then recomposing the shot. Such operations are generally intended to be quick and convenient.

Of course, there is also a problem of habit, in the era when the focus was still 9 o'clock, the coverage was too small, and some fuselages only had a cross focus point in the center, so the center focus point had faster speed and accuracy than other focus points.

Some people also believe that it is wrong to focus first and then compose the picture, and it should be composed first and then focused. After the composition is completed, adjust the focus point. Of course, this work is more often done by the system autofocusing, and finally pressing the shutter to shoot. This can avoid cosine error to the greatest extent.

Cosine error is that after the camera uses the center focus point to focus, the actual focus will move back, and the angle of the camera swing left and right when recomposing the picture, the greater the degree of focus shift, and in the process of recomposing, it is inevitable that the body will move left and right or back and forth, which are possible causes of false focus.

In fact, this question cannot be generalized at all, and is often determined by some objective reasons. For example, macro lenses and large aperture lenses can cause defocus if small movements can cause defocus, and it is a more reliable solution to compose the picture first and then focus.

Another example is that some machines with poor focusing performance do not use anything at the center point, especially with a telephoto lens, the success rate of non-midpoint focusing is very low, and it can only be predicted first, and then composed after focusing.

Is it aperture or shutter priority?

Aperture priority means that the photographer determines the aperture size by himself, and the camera calculates the corresponding shutter speed, and the shutter priority is the opposite. The aperture range depends on the lens, and the shutter speed range depends on the body (referring to the focal plane shutter).

Aperture priority makes it easier to control depth of field, and shutter priority makes it easier to capture dynamic scenes. Shooting still images, aperture priority is convenient, you can use depth of field to highlight the subject, shoot dynamic pictures, shutter priority is easy to improve the success rate.

Use your left or right eye to see the viewfinder?

There are many theories on the Internet about the question of "which eye should be used for framing", some say that it has something to do with whether it is left-handed, and some say that it has something to do with the distance between the eyes.

I specifically talked to Canon's engineers about this issue, and they don't have the so-called left and right eye design when designing SLRs.

The left or right eye depends entirely on personal habits, to be precise, the dominant eye. From a physiological point of view, the human eye, one is the main eye, the brain gives priority to accepting what this eye observes, according to habits, some people have the left eye, and some people are the right eye. When the main eye observes the viewfinder, the picture is relatively clearer, and the brain processes the image better, while the other eye is relatively poor. So don't worry about the problem of the left and right eyes in the future, you can use whichever eye you use to see more clearly.

Use the back screen or the shoulder screen?

It was first said that the existence of the shoulder screen was to save power. Then simply remove this shoulder screen, which is more power-saving.

For any old mage, it has become a habit to look at the parameter information from the shoulder screen, and there is no display screen on the back in the era of film machines, the parameters are displayed on the shoulder screen, with the rotor wheel and buttons, the parameter setting can be completed very quickly.

Some manufacturers also play some tricks, and those without shoulder screens are classified as entry-level machines. In fact, whether there is a shoulder screen or not should not be used as a criterion for us to choose a machine at all. If you are struggling with whether the shoulder screen is useful, give up this idea quickly, just like when you eat Western food for the first time, you can eat enough with chopsticks.
